MANU ROAD PHOTOGRAPHY
5 DAYS 4 NIGHTS
Day 1 — Elfin Forest
We depart early from Cusco, beginning our descent into one of the most biodiverse roads on Earth — the legendary Manu Road.
Our first stop is the charming Andean town of Paucartambo, where we enjoy breakfast before continuing into the cloud forest.
From here, the real exploration begins.
We will bird and photograph along the road, stopping at strategic locations to target some of the most sought-after montane species, including:
- Mountain toucanets
- Crested quetzals
- Barbets and mixed flocks
Along the way, we will visit carefully selected bird feeders, offering excellent photographic opportunities with:
- Hummingbirds
- Tanagers
- Other colorful cloud forest species
By the afternoon, we arrive at our lodge (Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge or Paradise Lodge), both ideally located within prime habitat.
In the evening or early morning, we will visit a lek to photograph Peru’s national bird, the spectacular
Andean Cock-of-the-rock — one of the most iconic wildlife experiences in South America.
Day 2 — 3 Descent to the Amazon
After an early session, we continue descending toward Pilcopata, entering lower elevations where Andean and Amazonian ecosystems merge.
This transition zone is incredibly rich in biodiversity and offers new photographic opportunities, including:
- Lowland and foothill bird species
- Mixed flocks and edge specialists
- Early Amazonian wildlife encounters
We arrive at our lodge surrounded by lush forest, where both daytime and nocturnal activity begin to intensify.
Day 4 — Day 5 Return to the Andes
We begin our ascent back toward the high cloud forest, revisiting key elevations along the Manu Road.
This is a strategic day focused on:
- Targeting species missed on the way down
- Improving photographic opportunities in better light conditions
- Taking advantage of changing weather and bird activity
We continue birding throughout the journey until reaching our next destination.
Our final day is spent at Wayqecha Biological Station, a world-renowned research station located in pristine cloud forest.
Here, we make full use of its excellent bird feeders, providing close-range photography opportunities with:
- High-elevation hummingbirds
- Tanagers and mixed flocks
- Unique cloud forest specialists
After a final morning session, we begin our return to Cusco, concluding an unforgettable journey across one of the most diverse ecological gradients on the planet.
