CUSCO & TAMBOPATA BIRDING

DAY 01.-
CUSCO – HUAYPO LODGE – ENSIFERA CAMP – OLLANTAYTAMBO TOWN
We start from Cusco airport. We will drive over the Cusco mountains and arrive to a beautiful bird spot, Huaypo Lake. Here we will spend some good time birding the special water birds and some others that move around this área. We also have a nice lunch facing the lake. Late in the afternoon we will arrive to Ensifera Camp, a place for hummingbirds and extra birds where we will end our day. All these mentioned places are along the famous sacred valley and Urubamba river to end up at Ollantaytambo town in a nice hotel.

DAY 02.-
QUILLABAMBA ROAD – PEÑAS – ABRA MALAGA
Breakfast is ready and we have get ready for the day adventure, this time we will visit and stop by Abra Malaga to look some endemic birds. After this nice stop we will go to the other side of the mountain and walk along nice paramo (local Grass) to look for some more birds and met some more local people plus a nice lunch in a very local restaurant. Right after this we will back to Ollantaytambo town where we will visit the local products at the local market to then go for our dinner in one of the many nice restaurant found around this little town.

Royal Cinclodes, Creamy Winged Cinclodes, Andean Flicker, Scaled Metaltail, Great Sapphirewing, White Browed Chat Tyrant, Rust and Yellow Tanager, White Crested Elaenia, Paramo Pipit, Black Siskin, Masked Flowerpiercer, Peruvian Sierra Finch. Chesnut Breasted Mountain Finch, White Tufted Sunbeam, Creamy Crested Spinetai, Rusty Fronted Canastero.
DAY 03.-
OLLANTAYTAMBO & TRAIN TO AGUAS CALIENTES TOWN
A nice breakfast at the hotel and then we will take the Voyager Experience at Inka Rail train for 02 hours to Aguas Calientes town. Once at this little town we will have a nice welcome time on a very cool place owned by the Hotel. After the lunch we will have a walk around Aguas calientes town, until we reach the train tracks, where we will make a tour looking for unique birds such as the curious cock-of-the-rock.
DAY 04.-
MACHUPICCHU VISIT
After breakfast we will move at the bus station to go up for 20 minutes till the main machupicchu’s gate. Once up in Machupicchu Our local tour guide will take us for a nice walk around this magical place with great Machupicchu information about incas general details. This place is so magical that you will feel like new when you leave. it is time to take pictures and take good memories. Then we will walk down this mountain till aguas calientes town where we will go for another great lunch. The rest of the afternoon we will rest and relax enjoying the mountains around us.
DAY 05.-
OLLANTAYTAMBO – VISIT TO LOCAL MARKET – CUSCO
After a delicious breakfast, we will take the train back to Ollantaytambo and then by car to Cusco, where we will have a lovely lunch in front of the city’s main square, which is surround by interesting churches and cathedrals. We then spend the afternoon exploring various local markets and doing some shopping.
DAY 06.-
CUSCO – PUERTO MALDONADO.
Today we will flight to city of Puerto Maldonado(rainforest) and we will drive the Road Interoceanica an average of 48 km, then enter a dirt road by middle of the forest for approximately 18 km to the banks of the Tambopata River.
You will arrive to our Tambopata Lodge for the afternoon. After lunch you will take a walk through the natural trails, where you will discover and learn about the primary and second forest, its components, uses, man-made transformations, and its relevance to the world. During this walk it’s possible to see some species of birds. At the end of the hike, we will climb the highest Canopy tower. A great place to see the amazon basin and be on the lookout for some birds like toucans, parrots and macaws.
DAY 07.-
CHUNCHO MACAWS CLAY LICK TAMBOPATA
We wake up very early, at 4:30, to leave at 5:00 a.m. our destination, the world’s largest Macaw clay lick, a trip of approximately 35 minutes boat trip, on the way we will have the incredible opportunity to see Capybaras, which are the largest rodents in the world, tapirs, and you can even see the South American feline, the Jaguar, many of our customers (35%) have seen this beautiful cat and they have photographic evidence of these encounters with these mammals.
Once arrived to the Macaw clay lick we will have a chance to see hundreds of parrots of different species who come to eat clay on the wall adjacent to the River. We will accommodate us in our chairs to wait to begin one of the most beautiful natural shows of the birds in the world. Species of large macaws the most colorful of America, Red and Green, Blue and Yellow and the Scarlet’s Macaws gather to eat clay needed in their daily diet to eliminate toxins. Parrots such as the Blue headed, Orange cheeked Parrot, White-eyed, Dusky-headed Parakeet, among others come every day to same place for the same purpose.
DAY 08.-
NATIONAL RESERVE OF TAMBOPATA
We will make up with the sounds of the birds and probably howler monkeys, will get our breakfast and then we will take a boat for 20 minutes and then travel 2 hours car to Puerto Maldonado. Where we will board a boat that will take us 1 hour downstream until we reach the Tambopata National Reserve. After checking in at the control point, we will walk 1 hour along a trail to a channel connected to the Sandoval Lake.
We will navigate the lake by boat or catamaran toward the Lodge to enjoy the excursion looking for wildlife before sunset.
DAY 09.-
LAKE SANDOVAL
We will have a nice breakfast to explore the wonderful Sandoval Lake where we will navigate by canoe, observing the local wildlife, such as insects, exotic birds and even a family of giant otters, difficult to spot elsewhere. We will also be able to see black caimans, which are more active at night. Is a very nice place with very good nature view.
Sandoval Lake is one of the best places to find Giant River Otters, Red-howler Monkey, Brown Capuchin, Bolivian Squirrel Monkeys, and many water birds like Ringed & Amazon Kingfisher, Hoatzin, Agami Heron, Red-bellied Macaws and many more birds like Pied Lapwing, Capped Heron, Black Skimer, Snowy Egret, Great Black Hawk, Osprey, Eastern Kingbird, White Banded Swallow, Southern Rough Winged Swallow, Green Ibis, Olive Faced Flatbill, Ringed King Fisher, Purplish Jay, Crested Caracara, Black Vulture.
DAY 10:
BACK TO THE CITY
Pack your bags and say goodbye to the Amazon. The group will head back to Puerto Maldonado.
