SERPENTS & CAIMANS
7 DAYS / 6 NIGHTS
The destination offers an exceptional field environment for naturalists, herpetologists, and biodiversity researchers worldwide. Participants will survey undisturbed primary habitats, document high-value indicator species, and examine the structural complexity of rainforest ecosystems. This region’s remarkable species richness and ecological integrity provide an ideal setting for observational studies, species monitoring, and advanced wildlife documentation.
Day 1 -3:
Arrival in Puerto Maldonado, Perú
This expedition guides participants through two ecologically distinct habitats: Sandoval Lake and the Tambopata River, both part of the Peruvian jungle’s highly biodiverse rainforest.
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado (airport code PEM). Our guides will be there to welcome you, help you settle in, and provide any assistance you need.
At Sandoval Lake, field activities focus on herpetofauna surveys and aquatic ecosystem observation. Target species include Melanosuchus niger (black caiman), Helicops angulatus (brown-banded water snake), Pipa pipa (surinam toad), and diverse anuran species. There is also a high likelihood of observing Pteronura brasiliensis (giant river otters) and other semi-aquatic mammals. The lodge overlooking the lake provides continuous observational access, facilitating behavioral studies and photographic documentation.
Day 3–6:
Macaws and snakes
The second phase of the expedition takes place near the Tambopata River, a prime area for amphibian and reptile biodiversity. This location is proximal to the largest regional macaw clay lick, allowing optional monitoring of Macaws species (Ara spp) and other psittacids. Systematic diurnal and nocturnal surveys of the rainforest will enable encounters with diverse taxa, including herpetofauna, avifauna, primates, arthropods (notably tarantulas), and medium-to-large mammals. Emphasis is placed on structured herping observation, species identification, and habitat assessment, providing participants with both field experience and data-gathering opportunities in a near-pristine Jungle ecosystem.
Day 7:
Back to Puerto Maldonado
Pack your bags and say goodbye to the Amazon. The group will head back to Puerto Maldonado.
