BIRDWATCHING IN TAMBOPATA
5 DAYS 4 NIGHTS
Day 1-2:
Arrival to Puerto Maldonado & Agami Heron
This expedition takes you deep into two ecologically rich and distinct habitats of the Peruvian Amazon: Sandoval Lake and the Tambopata area.
At Sandoval Lake, participants will explore aquatic and semi-aquatic ecosystems, targeting species such as Melanosuchus niger (black caiman), a variety of water snakes, and diverse amphibians. There is also a strong chance of observing Pteronura brasiliensis (giant river otters) in their natural environment. Our lodge overlooking the lake offers uninterrupted wildlife viewing opportunities, perfect for both observation and field photography.
Day 2 – 5: Macaws & serpents
Next, we move to a lodge near the Tambopata River, a hotspot for herpetofauna, including snakes and frogs, and a short distance from the region’s largest macaw clay lick—a spectacular site for birdwatching that can be visited upon request. Participants will engage in both day and night excursions, allowing for encounters with reptiles, amphibians, birds, primates, tarantulas, and a variety of mammals.
This expedition balances structured birding observation with immersive rainforest exploration, providing an unparalleled opportunity to study species behavior, document biodiversity, and experience one of the most pristine and biologically diverse ecosystems in the world.
